I had to go to the bank (The Co-operative Bank) today and upon entering found that they were collecting for Sport Relief and were all wearing some kind of sport clothing. Very commendable, except that one person was wearing a training jacket that on the back had in huge letters “Bank of Ireland”. Shurely a mishtake?

I have just discovered an interesting warning on one of the toilets in my department in Sheffield (I haven’t checked whether similar ones are on other toilets as well). It reads as follows:
Any member of staff caught using the cistern to keep beer chilled will face a disciplinary investigation. — The Mgmt.
This raises a host of intriguing questions. Who was/were the member(s) of staff that did this and thus caused the sign? How often did it happen that a sign was needed? What about PhD students, are they allowed to keep beer chilled? What if I want to chill a bottle of white wine, is that ok? Inquiring minds wish to know.

A somewhat belated post, but here are some photos taken in the Autumn of 2011. These were taken in our old garden in Milton Keynes, in Simmonds Yat, and in Cambridge.
Also some photos from the New Year’s party we went to in London. Good fun it was too

We’ve been making the most of the heatwave that hit the UK in the last week and a half (it’s over now, unfortunately) by going out for nice walks in the countryside. The nice thing about the area around Milton Keynes is that there is a large variety in the possible walks.
Our first walk took us to the area around Wigginton (photos here), which was a nice mix of walking along fields, through woods, and along the Grand Union canal. There was also quite a bit of height difference between the various parts, which made for a varied experience. The next week we went to Ashridge Estate, where the whole walk was in a wooded area and mostly flattish, so much more relaxing an experience. It’s a bit windy and grey cloud cover today, so we’ll see whether we venture out, but it’s bound to be enjoyable (unless, I guess, we get rained on or similar).

Just to prove that even in England you can have a barbecue or two in the garden.
